This full 2 day Beginners Beekeeper course, run in association with Ballyhaunis Beekeepers Association, will give you an excellent theoretical grounding if you are planning on becoming a beekeeper any time soon, and also includes a visit to the Ballyhaunis Association apiary for hands on experience.

Taught by the very well respected Henry Horka, there is also the opportunity to go on to take the FIBKA (Federation of Irish Beekeepers’ Associations) Preliminary Exam at Gormanston the following weekend (subject to additional fees).

Topics covered will include:

  • Life History of the Honey Bee and Occupants of the Hive
  • Getting started, Equipment needed and Manipulation of the Colony
  • Foraging of the Honey Bee
  • Hygiene and Disease
  • Swarm Control.  (Simple Queen Rearing)
  • Harvest the honey crop
  • A year’s work in the Apiary
  • And a visit to the Ballyhaunis Beekeepers Association club apiary (weather permitting)

Cost for the 2 day course in Ballyhaunis is just 40 Euros, including course notes and refreshments, with a booking fee of 20 Euros to secure a place. Accompanying children are free.
