About

The Mayo Organic Group is an eclectic bunch of organic growers, gardeners, producers, smallholders, farmers, and people interested in sustainable lifestyles. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at 7:30pm at Balla, County Mayo in the West of Ireland (except for July and August when there are no meetings as we are all too busy on our patches!).

Our aim is to promote organic horticulture and farming techniques and principles by providing a lively programme of cutting edge talks throughout the year. Our meetings are also a forum for selling produce where members are encouraged to bring any produce or spare plants they have for sale to any of our monthly meetings.

As well as informative and interesting talks every month we also hold various workshops and garden and farm walks throughout the year so members can gain first hand experience and witness ideas in action!

Please see our Upcoming Events page for more info.

History of the Group

The Mayo Organic Group was formed more than 25 years ago, beginning as a networking and support group for organic farmers and growers and those interested in gaining organic certification in the County Mayo area. Initial gatherings were held in Party, at Party House from where the group then moved to Westport, and then on to Mayo Abbey. Here it expanded to include those interested in organic gardening and a sustainable lifestyle. The group now meets at Balla community centre and occasionally meets at other locations, such as Mount Falcon and Westport.

Membership now includes smallholders, organic farmers, horticulturists, permaculturists, forest gardeners, teachers, transition town(er)s, and of course learners (all of us!). An eclectic bunch, indeed. We hope to bring in new members and new ideas, and then possibly initiate and support new local sub-groups as we grow.
